This poem written a few years after I’d met him, is for my favorite horse, My Boy, Snip. I think it’s my favorite poem of all the ones I’ve written. He may be ornery and stubborn and have a huge attitude problem even at 22 years old, but he still knows who’s the alpha in our relationship. He knows who his momma is….me. I had to teach my boy some manners before he became the perfect little gentleman he is today. I love him so much. He is my rock.
Snip:
Short and stocky,
Barrel-chested and shaggy shaggy shaggy,
Black and white four-legged beast,
Adorned with a white crescent moon on my forehead,
Marked by a white snip on my nose,
Strong and sturdy—sure-footed I am for sure,
Coal black eyes filled with a curiosity and friendliness—I am trouble definitely,
I am playful and full of fun,
I am stubborn and ornery—and am to be reckoned with,
I prick my ears at her footsteps,
My eyes sparkle and come alive with happiness at her appearance,
I paw the ground with my hoof in eagerness to get out and see her—ride with her,
I am a puppy dog—I follow her around happily,
I am an elephant—I have a long memory,
I am a teddy bear—I am cute and cuddly and huggable,
I am a donkey—stubborn and ornery to boot,
I am a monkey—curiosity and playfulness—I love to cause mischief,
I am a horse—galloping with her on my back—we are free together!
I am Snip.
