Tiger

The tiger is my favorite of all the big cats, and considering it’s part of my website name, I figured I should have a poem about the tiger. So here it is. I just finished writing it.

Tiger:

Black and orange stripes slink through the jungle,

Tail twitches,

Claws feel the ground,

Yellow eyes sweep the jungle blackness round,

Who am I?

You don’t see me for my shroud of black and orange,

You don’t see me for the trees and bushes that protect me,

You don’t see me for my stealthiness–my paws make no sound as I pad across the ground,

You don’t see me for the sable of the night–I blend with it–the night and I become one,

But I see you,

You do not blend with my home–the jungle,

You push through the brush–snapping twigs as you go,

Your feet on the ground are a thunder to my ears,

Your figure stands out–seen with my eyes of the dark,

Who am I?

I am the tiger and I see you.

Jaguar

The jaguar is one of my favorites of the big cats.

Jaguar:

I am stealthy and sleek,

I am dangerous,

My claws are sharp–I deal you a deadly blow,

My eyes glow with a dangerous light,

They seek you out–I find you,

I come to you in the night,

Softly–cautiously–and dangerously,

I come to you across the forest floor.

Eyes

I think this was inspired by a fantasy book that I was reading at the time.

Eyes:

Black eyes look out from the forest’s shadowy depths,

They glow like hot embers,

They stalk my dreams,

Golden eyes come forth,

Protect me,

Thick white coat warm me,

Wrap around me,

Give me a toasty fire and hold me close.

Dolphins at Play

I was feeling particularly playful in my poetry when I wrote this several years ago.

Dolphins at Play:

Dolphins play in the wide open sea,

Splish splash—there they go,

Joy at playing together shows in their beautiful black eyes,

They leap in the air—land with a splish splash in the clear blue water,

Leap, leap, leap,

Dive, dive, dive,

Ha ha! Ho ho!

This is what me and my fellows do in the sunny day!

Splish and splash—dolphins we are—splish and splash,

We are dolphins at play!

Hay hay!

Birds of Song

From several years ago, before I took care of Buddy or Birdie. (For the story on them, look in my photos and you’ll find their stories). I do wish I could get a pet bird someday….though not one of those singing birds. Something similar to a sparrow or a grackal.

Birds of Song:

Sky, clear and blue,

Mountains, fierce and proud—covered with snow,

Birds of song, sing, sing along!

Fly, fly away—to your home in the mountains—fierce and proud.

Wolf

From several years ago, before I got my wolf-arrow-inner strength tattoo. I’ve always loved wolves. I think they’re gorgeous creatures and they’re also one of my animal totems.

Wolf:

I howl at the moon—white light streaming down to illuminate me,

Black eyes glow golden in the white light,

Gray fur glistens silver—sparkles like many diamonds,

Fierce eyes are laid upon you—a warrior’s eyes,

Arrayed in armor of gray fur glistening silver,

I stand before you,

I howl to you,

I call to the moon,

To have her show me the way,

The warrior’s way—fierce, proud, brave, protector of all,

I come to you in your dreams—my howl driving away the evil spirits,

So that beauty once again shows herself to all,

Her light healing,

And then giving way to night once again,

And so I howl at the moon once again,

My black eyes glowing golden.

Mountain Lion

This was from several years ago. I had an inspiration for another animal poem. I love animals, and the mountain lion is one of my animal totems.

Mountain Lion:

Eyes sharp as an eagle and black as night,

Coat sleek and tawny-colored,

Claws sharp as a dagger,

And fangs deadly sharp,

I prowl the mountains,

Keep to the shadows,

I keep to the night—it is my home,

I live for the beauty of the darkness.
